Professor Raymond C. Stevens, PhD, The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA

In 2006, the MACPAD Board of Directors granted Professor Raymond C. Stevens, PhD of the Scripps Research Institute $110,000.00 to continue his research project to develop an oral   therapeutic to treat PKU. Specifically, this money will be used, along with a National Institute of Health grant, to research the conversion of an enzyme that is naturally produced by yeast to create a pill that could be used to relax the strict PKU diet. Dr. Reuben Matalon Genetics Research Trust University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX

In 2006, the MACPAD Board of Directors granted Dr. Reuben Matalon of Genetics Research Trust at University of Texas Medical Branch $40,000.00 to study the use of large neutral amino acids (LNAA) in the treatment of PKU. Specifically, he will conduct a double blind placebo controlled pilot study relating to the use of LNAA's in treating PKU.
